Head Lice Reminder
Head lice cases often increase during the fall and winter months, especially when children share hats, scarves, or other personal items. While head lice can be bothersome, they do not spread disease and are not a sign of poor hygiene.
Lice are most commonly spread through direct head-to-head contact or by sharing combs, brushes, hats, or helmets. Common signs include frequent itching, especially at night, and visible bite marks or sores on the scalp.
If you suspect your child has head lice, contact your healthcare provider. Safe and effective treatments are available over the counter or by prescription. Be sure to follow treatment instructions closely and use a fine-tooth comb to remove eggs (nits) from the hair.
To prevent re-infestation, wash all recently worn clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water. Personal care items like brushes and combs should also be cleaned in hot water. Items that can’t be washed, such as stuffed animals, should be sealed in a plastic bag for 14 days or placed in a hot dryer for 30 minutes. Regular scalp checks, especially when hair is wet, can help detect lice early.
